Travelling

Where is Oldenburg?

Oldenburg is located in the north of Germany, about 50 km west of Bremen.
There are several maps which describe this better.

Reach Oldenburg...

... by plane

Since Oldenburg does not have its own airport you may book a flight to Bremen, Hamburg, Hannover or Frankfurt.
(Amsterdam is less convenient.)
For European visitors we recommend using Bremen's airport since it has flights to many other airports in Europe.

All flight plans are available on the airports' sites:

Bremen Bremen
Hamburg Hamburg
Hannover Hannover
Frankfurt Frankfurt

If you prefer to land in Frankfurt you might consider taking another flight to Bremen:

After arriving on your desired airport you may continue by using the train, airport shuttle or taxi (from Bremen), by car or by bus:

... by train

Oldenburg has a train station with very good connections to Bremen, and from there to many major European cities.
Be aware of buying a ticket to Oldenburg in Oldenburg, also written as Oldenburg (Oldb), and not to Oldenburg in Schleswig-Holstein.
Here are some links for time tables (just click on "Search connection" after opening the site) for the dates 2006/09/13 and 19:

... by airport shuttle or taxi (Bremen airport only)

There is a shuttle that picks you up at Bremen airport and drops you off at your hotel in Oldenburg. It is 35 Euro for one person (and 40 for two etc.). You will have to make an advance reservation, either by telephone during business hours (9 am - 5 pm local time, ..49-441-811 14), at least a day in advance -- or via a web form. The transfer takes about 50 minutes. You will be picked up at the exit door inside the airport, by someone with a sign that has your name on it. For more information, see Luftibus.

There are also taxi cabs in front of the airport. They will take about 70 Euro for the transfer to Oldenburg.

... by car

Oldenburg is surrounded by Autobahnen (highways). When approaching Oldenburg some care is needed since, until October 2006, there will be some construction work on the Autobahn "A28". Thus, approaching from the east to the interchange "Kreuz Oldenburg-Ost" you are redirected northwards, around Oldenburg! You will leave the A28 shortly and then arrive at the "Dreieck Oldenburg-West" via the A29.

There you should leave the Autobahn to continue straight to the exit Haarentor (Campus Haarentor). (You could also turn off onto the A28 (direction Emden/Leer) and then leave the Autobahn at the exit Wechloy (Campus Wechloy).)

Having left the Autobahn at the exit Haarentor you should turn right onto the "Ammerländer Heerstraße". At the fourth traffic light, this is next to the Mercedes car dealer "Rosier", turn right into the Carl von Ossietzky Straße. Before turning right you should have seen a train bridge ahead of you; you will pass it in the course of following the Carl von Ossietzky Straße.Take a left at the fork a few hundred meters further on. There you'll find plenty of parking spaces. (These are marked 'P' on the campus map.)

If you take the exit Wechloy turn left onto Ammerländer Herrstraße. After an Autobahn underpass and then a train underpass turn left onto Carl-von-Ossietzky-Straße. Continue as above.

If you come from Hamburg

Drive on the A1 towards Bremen and take the exit Delmenhorst-Ost towards Oldenburg. Then you are on the A28.

If you come from Hannover

Drive on the A7, A27 towards Bremen. On the A1 take the exit Delmenhorst-Ost towards Oldenburg. Then you are on the A28.

If you come from the South

You may either go on the A1 until you hit A29 (follow the signs to Oldenburg). Sometimes the A1 has traffic jams, in this case (listen to the traffic radio!) you may prefer to take A31 (the 'Ostfriesenspieß', Bottrop to Leer), which is usually quite empty, although the trip (from Bottrop, say) is some 40 km farther this way. Just follow the signs to Oldenburg. Getting off A31 onto B401 saves you some km and is a pretty scenic route along the Küstenkanal.

You may also want to use the famous site map24.com (english) or map24.de (german) to plan your individual route.
